Introduction
The global construction industry’s carbon reduction system is undergoing a core structural shift in 2026. For a long time, international carbon governance focused on operational carbon generated during building usage. Currently, embodied carbon from raw material production, processing and transportation has become the key supervision focus of mainstream markets. With zero-carbon site policies gradually popularized worldwide, traditional construction modes and material application systems face comprehensive upgrades. Balancing embodied carbon and operational carbon reduction and realizing industrialized application of low-carbon materials has become a core breakthrough for enterprises to achieve long-term carbon neutrality goals.
1. Current Carbon Supervision Status & Industry Pain Points
At present, European, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets have successively launched dual-carbon management requirements covering operational and embodied carbon. Operational carbon supervision focuses on construction energy consumption, equipment operation and on-site dust and pollutant emissions, with mature on-site management systems widely applied. In contrast, embodied carbon management remains a major industry shortboard. Most enterprises lack carbon data statistics for upstream cement, steel and aggregate materials, resulting in incomplete full-cycle carbon assessment reports.
In terms of low-carbon material application, recycled aggregate concrete, low-carbon cement and green composite materials are still restricted by high production costs and insufficient large-scale promotion. Most low-carbon materials are only applied in demonstration projects and cannot form industrialized and standardized construction systems.
2. Future 2030 Zero-carbon Construction Development Trend
By 2030, zero-carbon construction sites will become the standard configuration of global high-end engineering projects. Embodied carbon indicators will be fully included in bidding assessment and project contract assessment, forming a full-cycle carbon closed-loop management from material procurement, on-site construction to building operation and demolition. Low-carbon building materials will achieve large-scale industrial production, with costs gradually converging with traditional materials.
Green construction competition will no longer focus solely on on-site energy-saving management, but will take full-life carbon optimization as the core competitiveness, driving the overall upgrading of the construction industrial chain.
3. Enterprise Low-carbon Transformation Strategies
Enterprises should establish a dual carbon management system for both operational and embodied carbon. Gradually replace traditional high-carbon materials with low-carbon cement, recycled aggregates and green building materials, and build standardized material procurement and carbon assessment systems. For construction sites, deploy on-site photovoltaic power generation, energy storage equipment and intelligent energy-saving systems to realize self-sufficient construction energy consumption.
In addition, enterprises need to calculate the long-term cost-benefit balance of low-carbon material application, cooperate with upstream manufacturers to promote localized industrial production of low-carbon materials, and form scalable zero-carbon construction solutions.
Conclusion
The shift from operational carbon to embodied carbon governance marks the entry of global construction into a full-cycle low-carbon era. The popularization of zero-carbon sites and industrialization of low-carbon materials will reshape industry operation standards. Enterprises that take the lead in completing dual-carbon system layout will gain long-term competitive advantages in the global zero-carbon construction market.
